The University of Liverpool Lung Cancer Research Group, led by Professor John Field, has advanced early lung cancer detection through the Liverpool Lung Project (LLP) and the UK Lung Screening (UKLS) low-dose CT screening trial. Their extensive data and clinical sample collections have supported global research into lung and smoking-related cancers. These are incredibly valuable for further research into the early detection of lung and other cancers, as well as other smoking related diseases. This includes fundamental work on the genetic basis of lung cancer risk.

The team developed the LLP lung cancer risk model, which identifies high-risk individuals for targeted screening and is now used in national NHS screening programmes. The UKLS trial validated this model, generating a large dataset to study risk factors. Their biobank of tumour and blood samples aids in developing and validating new diagnostic biomarkers.

The ongoing research, and the incredible potential discoveries from the amassed samples and data, mean it is vitally important that the team continue to invest in updated and upgraded databases and freezers. A generous donation of £10,000 from Cancer Research and Genetics UK will fund the purchase of a new specialist freezer which will help the team to secure their research for the future.
