Thyroid Cancer

What Is It?

Thyroid cancer is quite a rare cancer. Just over 1,500 cases were diagnosed in the UK in 2003. Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common, followed by follicular thyroid cancer. Medullary tumours and anaplastic tumours are much rarer.

Risk of thyroid cancer goes up with age in men until 75 years of age. But for women, the risk stays fairly constant between the ages of 30 and 55 and then falls.

Symptoms

The symptoms of thyroid cancer can include:

A lump at the base of your neck
A hoarse voice that does not get better
Sore throat or difficulty swallowing that does not get better
A lump elsewhere in your neck

Treatment

The main treatments used for thyroid cancer are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Hormone therapy is sometimes used.
