Eye Cancer

What Is It?

This type of cancer is very rare in the UK - there were 480 new cases of eye cancer diagnosed in the UK in 2003. There were roughly equal numbers of cases found in men and women.

Symptoms

People with eye cancer may have:

Bulging of one eye
Complete or partial loss of sight
Pain in or around the eye (rare with eye cancer)
Watery eyes
Blurred vision

Eye cancer can also cause:

Seeing spots, flashes of light or wiggly lines in front of your eyes. These are called floaters. They are also a natural part of getting old
Blinkered vision (loss of peripheral vision) – you can see what is straight ahead clearly, but not what is to the sides
A dark spot on the coloured part of the eye (the iris) that is getting bigger. Pain is quite rare unless the cancer has spread to the outside of the eye

Treatment

Treatment will depend on a number of factors as well as where the cancer is.
